DAY 4: Dealing with Data

Focus: Share - Tohatoha

What a great day of Sharing and Learning!
We deep dived and explored Google Forms, Spreadsheets and Maps.

Using these particular Google tools was a first for me, and caught my curiosity and attention.

MYMaps included simple exercises of pinning locations, using a measuring tool and uploading data from a google form database to the map. We all came up with different and FUN ways that this tool could be used; Create a map for your community, Create a route, Measure Distance and Area, Mobile Maps to name a few.
The following is a map I created, and the pins displayed our DFI Teams best holiday destinations. I've also pinned my walking route to work.

Some of my learning included Google Sheets by using pivot tables to summarize data, making it easier to understand all information contained in a spreadsheet. You can analyze large amounts of data and narrow down large data sets to see the relationships between data points. We were introduced to different students blogs to see how the data of posts and locations can be analysed and displayed in different ways. I looked at a student from Point England School blog post data. The column graph below that I created on google sheets, shows the monthly data. From looking at this graph you can tell that this student may have taken part in the Summer Learning Journey; having shared 29 blog posts during
January 2019. Fabulous effort!

As the week goes on I feel I will be titivating this blog as there was so much information to process. A big thank you to the wonderful facilitators and sharing their knowledge and experiences.

Tracy

  1. Kia ora Tracy,
Great to read that you found the day so worthwhile.
Digging into the data for learner blogs is quite revealing. Interesting how the number of blog posts varies so much. I wonder what the reason for this variation might be.
Can your role continue online next term?

    1. Morena Maria,
I found the data reveal very interesting. Your comment made me think a bit deeper about the variations of the student blog posts. Reasons could include the developing knowledge of both the student and teacher, culture of the school, relievers, absentees, holidays. Maybe I would be able to continue to use the Google sheets tool within my role? I feel my LSC position was just gaining momentum and then the lockdown happened so I'm not sure how it will unfold via online.
      Thanks, Tracy

    2. I am finding that keep connections and relationships online is a great way to go. I guess having something to offer as well helps. School Leaders are inundated currently with so many offers so keeping it simple is good way to go. Perhaps you and Vicki might come up with some ideas together on how to approach the now online LSC role. Happy to support you with this. A Meet to throw around some ideas perhaps...
Let me know what you think.

  2. Kia ora Tracy,
Another day of learning - and not just content but using Google Meet Hangout as well.
Loved the graph you created. It has so much data in it and would offer lots in terms of analysis.
It is great that you got to put Map B on your My Maps. One of the Cybersmart learnings for our students is to protect our identity and keep our private information private. I notice that Map B has your home address visible when I go into it. It would be best if you edit this and take your home address out of the equation. Maybe map between your base and your employing school - Gis Int to practise it more? Let me know if you need a hand to do this.
Looking forward to working with you again next week.
